Ross Douthat: The permanent migration crisis

Ross Douthat: The permanent migration crisis Last week, the Biden administration announced that it will offer work permits and deportation protections to more than 400,000 Venezuelans who have arrived in the United States since 2021. On paper, this is a humanitarian gesture, a recognition of the miseries of life under the Nicolás Maduro dictatorship. In political practice, it’s a flailing attempt to respond to a sudden rise in anti-immigration sentiment in blue cities, particularly New York, as the surge of migrants overwhelms social services and shelters.I say flailing because the fundamental problem facing the Biden administration is on the southern border, where every attempt to get ahead of the extraordinary numbers trying to cross or claim asylum has been overwhelmed. In Eagle Pass, Texas, The Wall Street Journal reports that in a week, an estimated 10,000 migrants have entered the city, whose entire population is less than 30,000. The subsequent movement of migrants to places like New York, Chicago and Washington, D.C., h...

Ask Amy: Morning grouch struggles with perky mom

Ask Amy: Morning grouch struggles with perky mom Dear Amy: I am the only “NOT-Morning” person in my family.Talking in the morning, or any noise, smell, or stimulation really, isn’t just annoying but actually more akin to painful. It’s like nails on a chalkboard, or being pinched — it elicits an involuntary reaction of cringe and a desire to retreat. My mother takes this really personally.First thing in the morning she wants to tell me things, or worse — ask me things. At best, I can muster a “Good morning” and a grunt, but I don’t think she’s ever understood just how much restraint is required for anything other than a snarl. She’s repeatedly accused me of being rude or mad at her, and the simple truth is that it’s not her — I just don’t want to talk in the morning, at all, to anybody.I have been explaining this for years, and to be honest I actually feel SHE’S being rude for not respecting this simple boundary. It starts both our days off wrong, to the extent that I just stay in ...

Match the owner’s suite to your lifestyle It’s the primary sanctuary in the home you’re planning with your builder. It’s the place where you can rest, recharge, take a bath and get away from commotion. It’s where you might read, write in a journal or enjoy your own taste in music, podcasts or movies.Time to plan a primary suite that both expresses the real you and makes you feel truly at ease. Also called the owner’s suite, this haven might exist on the main level or upstairs.Wherever the owner’s suite is, it’s wise to get involved in the details before construction begins. In their mission to keep home energy use and costs down by regulating indoor temperatures, California builders already install high-quality, high-density insulation. That insulation, along with low-emissive windows and doors with tight door seals, also helps keep out exterior noise.
