New Minnesota PWHL team adds three big-time free agents

Minnesota’s Professional Women’s Hockey League team doesn’t yet have a name, or even an official place to play. But general manager Natalie Darwitz does have her first three players — two of them with Minnesota ties.The team agreed to terms Wednesday on three-year deals with Team USA mainstays Lee Stecklein, Kelly Coyne Schofield and Kelly Pannek. Stecklein and Coyne Schofield each won national titles with the Gophers.Stecklein, 29, and Coyne Schofield, 29, were members of Minnesota’s former professional team, the Whitecaps, and helped it win the Isobel Cup in 2018-19 when the team played at TRIA Rink.Among them, Stecklein, Coyne Schofield and Pannek, 27, have six Olympic medals. ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. - One of the busiest streets in St. Charles was set to reopen later Wednesday morning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.Part of Zumbehl Road has been under construction for the past three months. The good news is that city leaders will take the barricades down Wednesday morning.The $5.6 million project is upgrading the bridge and storm drains that have been falling apart for nearly 40 years. ST. LOUIS - Two different crashes shut down stretches of Interstate 70 westbound overnight in north St. Louis city and north county. The first crash was deadly. The second involved a St. Louis city police unit.The situation involving the police officer unfolded about 3:45 a.m. Police first told FOX 2 earlier Wednesday morning that a city officer was driving a marked police unit when the vehicle was rear-ended by another driver, causing the officer to lose control and hit the center median. Now St. Louis police officials say there was some initial miscommunication, and they have released new information.The police now tell us that the crash only involved a police unit and no other vehicle. Police now say that the officer lost control of his vehicle and hit the center median after striking some large debris on the highway. LINCOLN COUNTY, Mo. -- A Lake St. Louis woman died early Wednesday morning in a Lincoln County crash. Saraya Sanders, 22, was pronounced dead at 2:13 a.m. by EMS personnel after her vehicle was found in a creek bed.The Missouri Highway Patrol says that Sanders was driving southbound on Route 47 north of Lindsay Road at around 11:40 p.m. She crossed the center of the road and overcorrected, hitting a guardrail, which sent her Nissan Altima airborne.The vehicle landed upside down in a creek. A group of Colorado voters filed suit Wednesday to keep former President Donald Trump off the state’s ballot in 2024.The ballot-qualification suit names the Republican front-runner and Colorado Secretary of State Jenna Griswold as defendants. Suspected DUI Crash near Maywood Avenue Left 2 Dead, 3 InjuredHUNTINGTON PARK, CA (September 6, 2023) – Friday evening, a two-vehicle collision on Randolph Place claimed the lives of Eduardo Rojas and Bertha Rojas.Officers responded to the collision around 8:45 p.m. at the intersection of Randolph Place and Maywood Avenue.Upon arrival, they located at least five people involved in the wreckage, including a trapped person inside one of the vehicles.Tragically, 29-year-old Eduardo Rojas and his mother, 51-year-old Bertha Rojas, sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.Eduardo, along with his brother Kevin and parents Bertha and Cuco, was heading home when their car crashed into a white SUV, their family members reported. Firetruck Collision on Compton Boulevard Left Four Firefighters InjuredCOMPTON, CA (September 6, 2023) – Early Tuesday morning, Asia Allen-Bookman and one other were killed in a racing crash on Avalon Boulevard.The deadly collision happened on September 5th, at around 12:30 a.m., at the intersection of South Avalon Boulevard and East Compton Boulevard.According to reports, a blue PT Cruiser racing westbound on Compton Boulevard collided with a northbound firetruck on Avalon Boulevard. Police spotted two other vehicles going at about 80 mph in the area prior to the crash.Unfortunately, the man and a woman inside the PT Cruiser sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.
