(KTLA) — A Malibu man has pleaded not guilty to four counts of murder in connection with a high-speed crash that killed four Pepperdine University students last week. Fraser Michael Bohm, 22, also faces four counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said Tuesday. Bohm was allegedly going 104 mph in a 45 mph zone on the Pacific Coast Highway on the night of Oct. 17 when he lost control and crashed into four sorority sisters who were walking along the road a few miles from campus. Bohm reportedly sideswiped at least three parked cars before crashing into the four college seniors, as well as two other people. The four women — identified as Niamh Rolston of Los Angeles; Peyton Stewart of Westwood, New Jersey; Asha Weir, who grew up in Skippack, Pennsylvania; and Deslyn Williams of Atlanta by Pepperdine University — died at the scene. The two other victims were taken to the hospital. WATCH: Deer charges through crowded W...

'Who is going to pay?': Lawmakers work toward national paid family leave policy

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 20:12:38 GMT

WASHINGTON (Nexstar) – On Capitol Hill, lawmakers say they're working toward a national paid family leave policy, but there's disagreement about how to accomplish that in a way that would benefit workers without negatively impacting employers.About 3/4 of workers in the U.S. have access to paid leave, but only about a third of low-wage workers receive the same benefit.“Somehow the United States is the only developed nation in the world without a national paid leave program,” Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) said.Senators from both parties say guaranteeing paid family leave would improve the entire economy because more people, especially women, would be able to work.“We've talked about it for years but never seem to do what actually needs to be done.” Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Michigan) said. But Republican Sen. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) said the government must tread carefully.“Imposing a one-size-fits-all paid leave program could actually limit employers' ability to offer paid leave policies,” Cr...

BELOIT, Wis. (AP) — People go to Noodles & Company to save a buck, not to have one interrupt their meal. But that's what happened in Beloit, Wisconsin, on Tuesday when a deer came crashing through the restaurant's window.Surveillance footage shows a deer charging into the crowded restaurant around lunchtime, prompting diners to scatter. The animal then explored the dining area and kitchen before exiting out a back door opened by an employee, Noodles & Company spokesperson Stephanie Jerome told The Associated Press. No one was harmed in the incident, and the location has since reopened after a deep clean, Jerome said. The restaurant offered a “2 Buck Mac & Cheese” special on Wednesday to commemorate the incident. AUSTIN (KXAN) — The owner of Thunderbird Coffee in East Austin said that he is exploring options for rezoning the location, after announcing last week the upcoming closure of the 17-year-old shop. Ryan McElroy said that the business has not seen sustainable demand since the pandemic."However, we are exploring other concepts and are hopeful to keep the laid-back feel that the coffee shop had for the past 17 years, including working with the existing building and adding parking on the adjacent lot," McElroy said.McElroy describes a "public house type of vibe" at the core of concepts for the location. He also said that the new business may include alcohol sales, which requires him to file a rezoning request with the city. The request asks for a CS-1, or commercial-liquor sales, designation. If granted, McElroy's business would be permitted to serve alcohol without also selling food. Local firm Thrower Design is working on McElroy's behalf with city filings. "Rezoning is sought to allo...

Radiologic technologist Kelly Vessel works at an imaging facility in Baton Rouge. She provided a few early signs and symptoms of breast cancer to look for."When checking for early signs of breast cancer, look for new lumps or masses, swelling of the breasts, nipple or breast pain, swollen lymph nodes under the arm and near the collar bone, nipple discharge, other than milk, and skin dimpling," said Vessel. Vikings tried Tush Push with quarterback Kirk Cousins. It didn’t go so well.

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 20:12:38 GMT

It was almost as if the Vikings asked themselves, “What would the Philadelphia Eagles do?”After rookie receiver Jordan Addison drew a pass interference penalty in the end zone, the Vikings got the ball at 1-yard line against the San Francisco 49ers with a chance to take a big lead on Monday Night Football.Everybody knows what the Eagles would have done in that situation. They would have opted for their signature play —- the Tush Push —- which has become inevitable in short-yardage situations. It has worked so well, in fact, that some people actually think it’s unfair. You wouldn’t know it by watching the Vikings try it against the 49ers. On consecutive plays near the goal line, the Vikings tried the Tush Push with quarterback Kirk Cousins. After getting stuffed at the line of scrimmage, they lined up to do it again, and got called for a false start.“It should be repeatable,” Cousins said. “You’d like to think that it could be done by any team...

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Buckle up, phone down. A new law in Missouri and now state police and families impacted by distracted drivers are challenging Missourians.Since the end of August, drivers of all ages have been prohibited from holding their phones to text, call, or scroll on social media while behind the wheel. Missouri was one of the last states in the country to enact this law. Those who lost their loved ones are just happy their voice has been heard."It's on the sign," Adrienne Siddens said. "I'm so proud of the buckle up, phone down signs that now say 'state law.' It's really powerful, and it's really exciting to be able to say we're no longer the last state waiting for this."In May 2019, Adrienne received a phone call no one wanted to get. Her husband, Randall, a father of three, was struck by a distracted driver while picking up cones after a triathlon race in Columbia."The woman driving the car that hit Randall was video chatting, speeding, and not paying attention to sto...

Sean Payton is worried about Sunday, not Tuesday.Sunday, of course, the Broncos host Kansas City as eight-point underdogs but with a chance to end the Chiefs’ 16-game winning streak against Denver.Tuesday, then, is the NFL’s trade deadline.Could the difference between 2-6 and 3-5 alter Denver’s decision on whether to try to sell on the trade market at the deadline?“No, no, no,” Payton said. “(The deadline) is next week sometime, I think. But no. We’re focused on winning with this group and these guys here. We went through this in the offseason, too, and it’s the news cycle and it’s part of the deal.“But no, not at all.”Payton has said previously that the Broncos will listen when teams call and ask about players but that they’re not actively shopping. The number of players who come up in discussions, of course, far outstrips the actual number of transactions that take place. A year ago, there were 10 trades executed on Nov. 1 — including Denver sending Bradley Chubb to Miami for...

Apartments next to Lakewood’s Belmar Park face backlash, but city leaders take no action

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 20:12:38 GMT

Lakewood City Council spent nearly four hours Monday night listening to members of the public and then debating what, if anything, to do about a proposed apartment complex adjacent to a city park. The process clearly exasperated some council members.“This is a do-nothing council … this council is horrible,” Councilman Rich Olver said at one point.“I won’t sit idly by and take that from someone who didn’t show up at the annual planning meeting until midway in, someone who does not participate,” Councilwoman Barb Franks responded. The exchange relates to 4.5 acres at 777 S. Yarrow St., where San Antonio-based developer Kairoi Residential wants to build a 412-unit apartment project with over 500 parking spaces. The company purchased the site with CT Corp. in 2021 for $6 million. The property houses a large parking lot and vacant office building. Tucked a block away from Wadsworth Boulevard, it backs into, but is not part of, the 132-acre Belmar Park. It offers direct access to the park’s ...
