Brewers’ Rowdy Tellez has surgery after hurting finger in accident, out 4 more weeks

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 02:18:58 GMT

CINCINNATI (AP) — Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Rowdy Tellez had surgery on his left ring finger after injuring himself during pregame warmups and will miss an additional four weeks. Brewers manager Craig Counsell said Tellez was shagging fly balls in the outfield Saturday and got his finger stuck in the padding of the center field wall. Tellez tore his fingernail off and had to undergo surgery to insert 17 stitches and repair a small fracture on the end of the finger. He had been on track to return Tuesday in Philadelphia. “It was a freak accident,” Counsell said Sunday. “Wasn’t sprinting, wasn’t going at a high speed, believe me. I actually saw it. Looked like a very innocent thing. Probably means we won’t see him back with us for four weeks.” Tellez isn’t expected to resume baseball activity for two-to-three weeks. He has been on the injured list since July 5 with right forearm inflammation.Tellez is hitting .213 with 12 homers and 36 RBIs. O...

(CNN) — World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz beat reigning champion Novak Djokovic in a thrilling five-set men’s final on Sunday to win his first Wimbledon title. The Spaniard prevailed after nearly five hours on Centre Court, eventually winning 1-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-1 3-6 6-4, and jubilantly fell onto the grass in celebration before volleying a tennis ball into the crowd. The 20-year-old becomes the third-youngest Wimbledon champion in the Open Era and adds a second major title to his resume after winning the US Open last year.Through his extraordinary display of athleticism and skill, Alcaraz prevented Djokovic from leveling Margaret Court for the most grand slam singles titles of all time and Roger Federer on eight for the most Wimbledon men’s singles titles. But it was anything but straightforward for Alcaraz, who came from a set down against arguably the greatest tennis player in history performing at the peak of his powers. In the end, as Djokovic’s attempted forehand failed to make it over the n...

Dangerous storms slam Northeast, leaving New York City under flood warning and killing 4 in Pennsylvania

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 02:18:58 GMT

(CNN) — A storm moving through the Northeast is threatening more than 40 million people with excessive rainfall and has already caused flooding that led to at least four deaths in Pennsylvania.Weather conditions in New York are unstable, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul told reporters Sunday, warning the state could see record rainfall levels. She pleaded with residents to avoid unnecessary travel.“A flash flood doesn’t give you warning. It comes literally in a flash,” Hochul said. “And in those moments, your car can go from a place of safety to a place of death.”The power is out in about 9,300 homes, mainly in Dutchess and Sullivan Counties, Hochul said, noting utility workers are trying to restore power.“If you’re one of those 9,300 families without your power, it is a frightening time,” she said.More than 5 million people in Southern Connecticut and Southeastern New York, including most of New York City, were under a flash flood warning until 4 p.m. ET., according to the National Weath...

‘Mission: Impossible’ debuts with $80M over 5 days, igniting box office but missing expectations

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 02:18:58 GMT

NEW YORK (AP) — After a globe-trotting publicity blitz by star Tom Cruise, “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” launched with a franchise-best $80 million over five days, though it came in shy of industry expectations with a $56.2 million haul over the three-day weekend, according to studio estimates. The Paramount Pictures debut was boosted by strong overseas sales of $155 million from 70 markets. But while a $235 million worldwide launch marked one of the best global openings of the year, “Dead Reckoning” couldn’t approach the high-speed velocity of last summer’s top film, “Top Gun: Maverick.”“Dead Reckoning Part One,” the seventh film in the 27-year-old series, had been forecast to better the franchise high of the previous installment, “Fallout,” which opened with $61 million domestically in 2018. Instead, it also fell short of the $57.8 million “Mission: Impossible II” debuted with in 2000.That puts the film’s opening-weekend tally very close to&nb...

PORTLAND, Maine — Partners on a $1 billion project aimed at bringing Canadian hydropower to the New England power grid are trying to sort out how cost increases during lengthy litigation will be shared, in hopes of getting the stalled project moving.A provision in a spending bill approved Thursday by the Massachusetts House would open the door to a renegotiation of the transmission project between the developers and Massachusetts utilities. The original contract called for the project to be funded entirely by Massachusetts ratepayers; negotiations would determine how any additional costs would be shared.Lauren Diggin from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources said she was thankful to the House for including language needed to jump-start the so-called New England Clean Energy Connect.“Completion of the NECEC line is important for Massachusetts customers. This project will help stabilize our electric rates, provide clean, reliable winter energy supply, and reduce the ...
