Where will San Jose’s 200 tiny homes from Gov. Newsom end up?

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:04:09 GMT

An empty plot of land in a remote part of north San Jose and owned by the Valley Transportation Authority may become the next homeless housing site, bolstering the city’s interim shelter portfolio by 200 units provided by Gov. Gavin Newsom. But the plan faces a potential snag. Officials on Thursday evening voted to start drafting up paperwork to finalize the deal while at the same time exploring three other potential spots around the city for the project. Some VTA leaders and workers are pushing back on the idea due to safety concerns.A final vote on the proposal, located on Zanker Road, is set for next month by the agency’s board of directors. The San Jose City Council has already given the thumbs up to the Zanker Road location. The roughly six-acre spot is just north of Highway 237 and right next to VTA’s Cerone work yard. A multitude of tech buildings, including a half dozen Cisco offices to the south, surround the location.San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, a voting mem...

By Joshua Goodman and Jim Mustian | Associated PressTAMPA, Fla. — When police arrived at his house to investigate a hit-and-run, Joseph Ruddy, one of the nation’s most prolific federal narcotics prosecutors, looked so drunk he could barely stand up straight, leaning on the tailgate of his pickup to keep his balance. But he apparently was under control enough to be waiting with his U.S. Justice Department business card in hand.“What are you trying to hand me?” an officer asked. “You realize when they pull my body-worn camera footage and they see this, this is going to go really bad.”That footage obtained by The Associated Press showed Ruddy apparently attempting to leverage his position to blunt the fallout from a Fourth of July crash in which he is accused of drunkenly striking another vehicle and leaving the scene. But despite being charged, the 59-year-old Ruddy remained on the job for two months, representing the United States in court as recently as l...

Stanford faces mighty challenge against USC, Caleb Williams

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:04:09 GMT

Stanford might face the biggest challenge it will have all season when it plays at No. 6 Southern Cal on Saturday night.Reigning Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams has picked up where he left off, completing 74 percent of his passes with nine touchdowns and no interceptions as the Trojans beat San Jose State 56-28 and Nevada 66-14.The USC quarterback is fourth in the nation in passing efficiency (236.4) and fifth in yards per pass attempt (12.2), but his ability to keep plays alive and scramble really separates him.“You have to keep him in the pocket,” Stanford coach Troy Taylor said. “So you have to get pressure on him but try and contain him. The elongated plays are difficult to cover. He’s a player that doesn’t really have any weaknesses and he has exceptional talent around him. You have to cover for a long time and contain a guy who is a great thrower and a great runner.”Related ArticlesCollege Sports | Stanford-USC history: No shortage of great moments in the centu...

PLEASANTON — Esther Hall had a secret. One year ago, in September, Hall decided it was time to close the Stable Cafe, the breakfast diner she has owned at the Pleasanton fairgrounds for more than 30 years.Hall told no one outside her immediate family. In the months since, she continued serving and cooking for her regulars, who have become a second family comprising horsemen, military veterans, members of local service clubs and others.“I was weighing so much,” Hall said in an interview at the diner, bacon sizzling on a burner nearby. “I miss my kids. I miss my grandkids. But if I leave, will I miss this family more?”The secret escaped in August, when Hall — who is taking her RV and moving to Utah to be closer to her children there — announced the Stable Cafe would be hanging up its boots. The restaurant’s last day was Friday. The final farewell drew a hearty crowd. And many customers had dropped in to pay their respects beforehand. Hall jokes ...
